Metaphors used in the bible can tickle our minds. They help us to remember the powerful points made in the scripture. But what is a metaphor.
A metaphor compares two unlike things using the verb “to be” and not using like or as as in a simile. For example, if I say my love for ice cream is like a shoppers love for clothes that would be a simile. But if I say my new figure is an ice cream cone then that would be a metaphor.
So let us jump right in and look at an interesting metaphor in scripture.
Hebrews 4:12-13 (NIV)
12For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Also like the Amplified version
12For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the [a]breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.
13And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.
Now isn’t that interesting? It puts the image of a two-edge sword in your mind. The metaphor here is the sword and how it works. So, right away you see how powerful God’s word can be in spiritual battle. That’s cool.

This post reminds me of a joke I heard.
Did you know that God likes coffee?
No I did not. Why do you say that.
Because he brews.
Thanks for sharing the imagery of metaphors in the word.
