1 Thessalonians 5:17 (New American Standard Bible)
17 pray without ceasing;
“I am out of my orange inhalers”, my mother told me while I was driving her to the beautician. I thought I would be able to drop her off, make a mad dash back to work., get some things done before picking her up and taking her back home. It was not a problem to call in her meds but just not in my plan.
After dropping her off I decided to make a mad dash to the pharmacy before the rush hour traffic. “I am sorry but you will have to wait until next week for that inhaler,” the Pharmacy Assistant was a kind woman doing her job but her words hung in my head. “But she said she is all out,” I said in a pleading voice.
My wonderful mom would not rest until she had that inhaler. I also, did not want to make a trip to the ER. I decided to cancel the rest of my work day until later and drive back to her house. I found her inhaler, and saw that she was right, it was on it’s way to the last spray. As I walked to the car I said a simple prayer, “Lord, you take care of this, need your help.”
After I arrived at the drug store I presented the inhaler. She sprayed it and said, “It Works.” But then it seems like an idea hit her. She turned to a holding area and returned with my moms inhaler. It was on the side waiting to be placed in a bag for pickup.
Ok, I know not a big deal, but to me it was because I knew that what was a “NO” had turned to a “Yes” all because of prayer. So, in the midst of my stress I was reminded to keep praying, keep praying for even the little things.
The funny thing is a woman that I met a few months ago, real prayer warrior called me and said, “Hello, how are you.” “How is your mom?” Just wanted to let you know I am praying for you.” She recalled that I had shared my distress with some areas of caregiving and wanted to know she was remembering me in prayer. She also, encouragemed me when I shared about the medicine and how I must always remember to do that in times of stress.
She said, “But you had the presence of mind to remember”, her words and call were worth more than money in the bank.
Prayer does work and I am convinced that we just can’t do enough of it. And that we don’t have to be on our knees every moment to do it. But talking to the Lord should come naturally to us. For sure he has an unlimited phone plan.
